Each year the old men in the village have a meeting at the headmans house and consider the day for the swinging ceremony. The akha call the swing festival yehkuja which translates as eating bitter rice a phrase which references the previous years dwindling rice supply incorporates the hope that monsoons will soon water the new crop. This ceremony may be performed during any week of the proper month.
Because the ceremony is in honor of a female god the ceremony is performed by akha women.
